Fall Annual Fall Volksmarch, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer

Experience the annual organized fall hike up the world's largest mountain carving-in-progress, Crazy Horse Memorial. The 10K (6.2-mile) route, round-trip, takes up to four hours to complete, with hikers setting their own pace. The terrain is hilly and rough with some steep inclines. Starting time is anytime between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. There is also a Spring Volksmarch which takes place in early June. Volksmarches are held as weather permits. Run Crazy Horse Full & Half-Marathon, Crazy Horse, Custer, Hill City

The Run Crazy Horse Half Marathon is a point to point course, beginning at the Visitor’s Center at Crazy Horse Memorial. The first 3 miles are within the Memorial Grounds on both paved and gravel roads. Participants will pass by the old schoolhouse and loop out to the bus turnaround at the base of the Crazy Horse Carving. At mile 3, the course becomes the Mickelson Trail. South Dakota was the first state to officially celebrate Native Americans' Day on the second Monday in October annually. Elsewhere, the day is observed as Columbus Day. Korczak Remembrance Day allows visitors to walk to the tomb of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982) to pay their respects to him, his wife Ruth Ziolkowski, daughter Anne & son-in-law James Howe, laid to rest in the family cemetery. This is the one time of the year that visitors are permitted to this area of the property and is a time for reflection as we move forward with Korczak & Ruth’s vision.
